The club was formed in 1980 to organise and provide competitive swimming for people in Etwall and the surrounding area. The club is based at the Etwall Leisure Centre, Etwall (west side of Derby), Derbyshire. All members, young and not-so-young, with varying standards of ability are well catered for. Within the club we have members who regularly compete at Regional, District and National level. The Club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association, ASA East Midlands Region and the Derbyshire ASA.
We are a relatively small club with currently about 300 members, and are always seeking new members. Our Chief Coach is Dean Howard, who is helped by Chris Roworth and Rachel Slevin.
The club trains four nights each week in the 6 lane x 25m pool at Etwall, and one night in the 6 lane x 25m pool at Repton School. Training periods suit different ages and ability. Particular attention is given to developing our younger swimmers.
IMPORTANT: We are currently running at full capacity of 300 swimmers, with sessions reaching the maximum numbers without absences.
At present, we have a waiting list of swimmers, which will be reviewed on a monthly basis by coaching team. Please note we do however have availability for Masters swimmers.
If you wish to join the Club, please email our Membership Secretary and the swimmers' names will be added to the waiting list. They will then be contacted in due course.
To make it fair and consistent for all, and to ensure the Coaches are focused on their duties, unfortunately we are unable to answer membership enquiries on poolside. Thanks

Etwall took a squad of 23 swimmers to compete in the Derbyshire Championships which were held over the weekends of the 20th 21st 27th and 28th February. This was broken down into 10 sessions over the two weekends with three sessions on the Saturday and two sessions on the Sunday meaning a very busy schedule for some. The format of the championships had changed this year to move in line with British Swimming requirements and there were now heats as well as finals for the 50 and 100m races.
Despite only having a small squad our swimmers entered 164 races and came away with 48 medals: 24 gold, 9 silver and 15 bronze medals and an additional 35 top 8 finishes with a P.B rate of 80% which is a fantastic return; very well done to all! We had 6 county champions Carys Coppen, Ryan Lovatt, Toby Arnold Charlotte Hall and Adam Banks but pride of place must go to Mia Slevin who secured 14 Golds in the 14 events she entered.
The team consisted of the following swimmers:
Malachy Watt, Adam Banks, Sam Littler, Toby Arnold, Ryan Lovatt, Mia Slevin, Sophie Hotchkiss, Amelia Twells, Jessica Banner, Libby Bateman Arkinsall, Alice Proudler, Emily Whitfield, Charlotte Hall, Chloe Holden, Carys Coppen, Beth Willetts, Oliver Makepeace, George Preston, Meghan Geofferson Rory Knowles, Zara Knowles, Alice Smart Jeremy Ip.
Without volunteers, the club would not be able to attend these events, so a special thanks to the following people: Rachel Slevin, Cathy Hall, Andy Banks, Kate Geofferson and Clive Smith who were poolside coaches/managers. Despite his busy life, Head Coach Dean Howard also managed to attend a couple of sessions, which was well received by the swimmers. We hope he was proud of the swimmers he has helped to develop. Finally thanks to Andrew Littler and Andy Hall who were poolside officials and Denise Coppin and Lisa Smart who were event volunteers.
A full report will be included in the next newsletter.

On Sunday, 6 December, 23 Etwall swimmers took part in the Derbyshire ASA County 50m Sprints, which were held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
Out of 84 swims, 49 swims by the swimmers, beat their entry time. We had the following swimmers who achieved top 6 placings:
Top 3: Toby Arnold (top three placings), Helen Rolle (top 3 placings), Jacqui Mann (top 3 placing), Malachy Watt (top 3 placing), Carys Coppen (top 3 placings), Beth Willetts (top 3 placings), Ryan Lovatt (top 3 placings) and Charlotte Hall (top 3 placing).
4th-6th placings: Emily Whitfield, Adam Banks, Sam Littler, Kynan Wong, Chloe Holden, Charlotte Hall, Jess Banner and Sophie Hotchkiss.
This was a remarkably achievement by those who took part. Also, they did the Club proud by their impeccable behaviour on poolside and when warming up/cooling down in the diving pit.
Well done to you all. Not long now until the Derbyshire ASA County Championships in February. Keep up the hard work in training and as you saw last week, the hard work in training does pay off.
We had a fantastic night of swimming on Saturday night at Burton. Burton and Etwall had two teams each in this annual friendly gala.
Many of the swimmers had either not competed recently or were racing for the first time. All of the swimmers behaved impeccably before, during and after the gala. The Burton team leader specifically mentioned our team’s good manners and sportsmanship. So well done and thank you to all swimmers.
It was a tricky gala to manage and swim in so far as the individual swims were time limited. This gave some selection headaches and some very calculated swims – well done to those who had to slow down! In a sport where going as quickly as you can is what matters, the swimmers adapted well. It also gave an opportunity for swimmers to race their less favoured strokes in their bid to stay under the time limits!
In the relays, we were not constrained by time and it showed. There were 17 relays in total for each of our two teams. In these we achieved eleven first places and five second places. Our takeovers were great, showing the practise and dedication in the training pool.
As a club, our teams raced 96 events and only had 3 DQ’s for swimming violations which is less than some recent galas with more senior racers – so again, well done. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, we had a number of speeding tickets – thereby scoring no points for that event. The Blue Team were excluded for speeding from 8 events, but still managed a credible 2nd place overall, just 4 points behind Burton’s A team. The Silver Team, with many new racers and underage swimmers were only 40 points further back. Both solid results and a promising foundation for next year’s (unrestricted!) Diddy League!
Due to numbers, the boys had more races to swim than the girls, six of whom had 6 races each. Malachy Watt (aged 9) raced in 7 events without complaint even competing in an 11’s relay. The girls filled the gap by a missing swimmer seamlessly too.
Finally, a massive thank you to all of the parent helpers and more senior swimmers who made sure times were recorded, swimming judged, swimmers managed and general order was maintained poolside! Without you all, we wouldn’t have galas for our children to attend.
Etwall Eagles Summer Party 2015
Over 100 people attended the scorching annual summer party on the 27th June and a fantastic time was had by all.
This makes a change from swimming!
The event, held at the Scout Hut in Etwall, was perfectly timed for everyone to enjoy the fab weather and there was great live music, a very tasty BBQ, bouncy castles and a bar – what more could anyone want!
Queuing for the delicious BBQ. All locally sourced, good quality meat from Redshaw’s Butchers in Repton
Is that a Derventio beer Ted Bainbrigge?
‘Liquid Brass’ kept everyone feeling happy
A happy event organiser on her happy bike…
